This is a list of places we’ve researched to understand what works in these operations that support artists in a sustainable way.

“ABC No Rio is a collectively-run center for art and activism. We are known internationally as a venue for oppositional culture. ABC No Rio was founded in 1980 by artists committed to political and social engagement and we retain these values to the present. We seek to facilitate cross-pollination between artists and activists. ABC No Rio is a place where people share resources and ideas to impact society, culture, and community. We believe that art and activism should be for everyone, not just the professionals, experts, and cognoscenti. Our dream is a cadres of actively aware artists and artfully aware activists.”

Flux Factory

“Flux Factory’s Mission is to support emerging artists through Artist-in-Residencies and Exhibitions, education and collaborative opportunities. Flux is an artist-led space that builds sustainable communities and retains creative vitality in NYC. Flux’s home in Long Island City is a creative hive that incubates experimentation with collaborative processes. Flux hosts over 75 annual multidisciplinary events; all are free to the public while all participating artists are compensated. Each year Flux selects 40 Artists-in-Residence to develop their creative practices by offering affordable studios, shared workspaces (such as a print shop, wood shop, and technical office), a solo exhibition, as well as professional development opportunities. Flux commissions 100 multidisciplinary artworks annually through open calls with 4 annual Group Exhibitions.”

The New Institute makes museum presentation space available to creators, who arrange the set-up, take care of attracting visitors and carry the costs of presentation.

OT 301

OT 301, Amsterdam (visited) - https://www.ot301.nl 

“The OT301 has been squatted (1999) and bought (2006) by a diverse, international community that is united in an association called EHBK. We run this alternative, not-for-profit platform as a collective, in which housing, workspaces and public functions are combined to contribute to the arts, politics and subculture.”

Plantage Dok

Plantage Dok, Amsterdam - https://plantagedok.nl 

“The Plantage Dok is very much a collective project. It is a building that is run by the people who work there along lines of cooperation and equality. Everybody involved share the responsibility and are encouraged to bring forth their own initiatives. These days some 30 people are present in the building. They are concerned in many fields of activity. There are architects, visual artists, actors, political activists, crafts people, musicians and designers. The (semi) public facilities of the building are a large hall The Dokzaal, a café and gallery space The Dokhuis Gallery and an artist in residence The Dokhuis Guest Studio. The Dokzaal is a communal space for activities inside the building and is also used by outside organizations for various cultural activities. The café/gallery is used for exhibitions and performances.”

The PROGR is an artistic center and cultural hub. More than 150 artists from every discipline work in this studio, from graphic designers to choreographers and filmmakers.

Roodkapje is multi-voiced, energetic and supportive and offers a space to explore, experiment and execute. The cultural program happens in every nook and cranny and from noon till the early morning hours. We believe a hamburger can be art and celebrate both the low- and the high brow. We travel beyond existing art forms and break through boundaries and binaries.”

Vaudeville Park, Brooklyn

“Vaudeville Park showcases unique and affordable community arts programming. “WORM is the ultimate test environment for alternative art production, experimental ways of living and non-academic knowledge development. We are a network organisation at the intersection of (popular) culture and (performing) arts, fueled by an abiding interest in all the inspiring, beautiful, urgent, vital, raw, unruly and / or crazy shit that our fellow human beings come up with. We do not see the chaos that comes with it as a problem; rather we use it as energy for action.”
